Video Work ”By The Side”
Shot in 2022
Over the course of six months, Mitsuya filmed his aluminium plant sculptures outdoors, taking one photograph every minute utilizing a digital mirrorless camera in time-lapse mode. The result is a video comprising over 100,000 photographs compiled into a 2.5-hour long video. By simply visualizing the long period of time from summer to winter, it is possible to observe how the surrounding environment changes in relation to the existence of the artist’s aluminium plant sculptures. This video allows the viewer to appreciate the two timelines, one of which represents the artist’s aluminium plants that never wither, and the other which represents the mutability of nature. The artist demonstrates the distinction between the two while simultaneously illustrating their interdependence. The aluminium plants exert a positive influence on the surrounding environment, mirroring the beauty of nature. Conversely, the surrounding plants and insects are influenced by their aluminium counterparts. The film, edited in 4K, projects a simple beauty. The beauty of nature is manifested and mirrored in various forms, including: the colours of the sun, the sound of thunder, the freshness of the air, the sensations of wind, rain and snow. When one surrenders to its long running time, allowing the images to unfold, details of anything and everything that one normally does not see, become apparent. Little creatures are busy moving around and working hard at something. Small weeds orient their growth point towards the sun. In winter, they finally shrivel up and die, despite their attempts to stand up again and be revived. The daily sunsets and sunrises, the twinkling of the stars and the moon are all refracted by the aluminium foil. In a fast-changing nature, the aluminium sculptures, though they resemble real plants, do not change at all. The viewer is left to decide how they perceive their existence.
